On the surface of the body are windows or doors that allow communication between the internal and external environment. These are the acupuncture points. By stimulating the point with painlessly inserted sterile one-time use needles, we send instructions or impulses to regulate the internal environment. These points are connected by channels. There are 12 primary channels which can be understood as functional systems, or areas of influence that include nerves, blood vessels, lymph nodes, etc. Branching off these 12 primary channels are other channels so that the body is actually covered up and down, horizontal, internal to external. The best way to visualize this is to see an intricate web that allows for a coordinated communication. Instructions travel along this web, rectifying disturbances. If communication and circulation are corrected, the body can eliminate symptoms and overcome illness.
